I actually came up with this on the way home from work one day, and had to hum the intro to myself all the way home to ensure I didn't forget it!
This is very much heavily F-Zero inspired, though it works or a SHMUP as well in my mind. The end part wasn't actually part of the concept at first, but it came together really well, I loved how it escalated so I kept it.
